Type 1 Diabetes Reversed!

A woman from Tianjin, China, recently became the first person to have her type-1 diabetes cured through a stem cell procedure.

Using the patient’s own stem cells, the treatment offers new hope for managing type-1 diabetes, which previously required donor islet cells to produce insulin. Unlike type-2 diabetes, which can be caused by poor lifestyle choices, type-1 diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas. Treatment typically involves insulin injections and immunosuppressants, but the only near-cure has been islet cell transplants, which are limited by donor availability.

Chinese researchers took the patient’s tissue, created pluripotent stem cells, and reprogrammed them to form islet cells. After transplanting these cells, they observed that the first subject, a 59-year-old man, was producing insulin within three months and had near-normal blood sugar levels after four months. In a more recent case, a young woman received cultivated stem cells injected into her abdominal muscles. This new site allowed researchers to monitor the islet cells with MRI. Two and a half months later, she no longer needed insulin, maintaining normal levels for over a year.

Experts are cautiously optimistic. James Shapiro, a transplant surgeon in Canada, called the results "stunning." Daisuke Yabe, a diabetes researcher from Japan, noted that if this can be replicated, it could be groundbreaking. However, more time is needed to confirm the long-term effects before calling it a cure. The patient will reach the two-year mark in November, and the research team plans to expand trials to 10-20 more patients if her results hold.

Vertical Greening

VERT at the Chelsea College of Arts – credit, Ed Reeve, courtesy of LDF, released

At the London Design Festival, a new piece of street furniture called "Vert" enables quick urban greening with minimal effort and high impact. "Vert" is a simple, polygonal structure made of boards, nets, and ropes that allows climbing plants to cover concrete areas, adding shade and moisture.

The concept behind Vert is to help cities reduce the Urban Heat Island effect, where urban areas retain heat longer than natural environments. "It's like street furniture," says Stefan Diez, Vert’s lead designer. "It functions like a shelf placed in public spaces, allowing cars, bikes, and pedestrians to move underneath, while also providing seating." Urban Heat Islands are largely caused by flat surfaces, like buildings and asphalt, that absorb and radiate heat throughout the day. Vert counters this by creating shaded, uneven surfaces with plants that add moisture and reduce heat.

Developed by Stefan Diez's design studio, the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), and urban greening experts OMCºC, Vert was unveiled at the Chelsea College of Arts during the festival. AHEC recommended American red oak for the structure because it grows quickly, stores carbon, and has the right strength for the design. The triangular shape of Vert is key to its strength, requiring fewer materials while withstanding wind and plant weight. Its modular design allows flexibility for different settings, without compromising durability. It also provides a framework for hanging seating made from netting.

Herbs and Spices to Warm Up Your Fall Meals

As the weather cools down, certain spices not only enhance flavor but also provide key health benefits. Here are three to add to your fall cooking:

  1. Cinnamon
A common spice in fall dishes, cinnamon adds warmth and sweetness. It's packed with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Cinnamon can also help regulate blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for those managing insulin sensitivity.

  2. Nutmeg
Nutmeg brings a nutty flavor to both savory and sweet dishes like soups and pies. It’s known for aiding digestion and promoting relaxation, helping to reduce stress.

  3. Turmeric
Known for its anti-inflammatory effects, turmeric is a key ingredient in curries and soups. Its active compound, curcumin, supports joint health and may help improve mood.

Adding these spices to your meals can boost flavor while offering health benefits, making them a smart choice for fall.

Mind Stretchers

⁉️

It is energy and motion, it can fly across the ocean. It can listen and even speak, it can see and even seek. It eats neither fruit nor gruel, it eats energy and fuel. Better say: It doesn't eat; It is transformed into heat.
