A newly developed “active packaging” method has been shown to reduce mercury in canned tuna by up to 35%. This breakthrough uses a water solution enriched with cysteine, an amino acid that binds to mercury molecules and prevents them from remaining in the fish. “Our study shows alternative ways to address mercury contamination beyond simply limiting consumption,” says Mehdi Abdollahi, Associate Professor at Chalmers University and coordinator of the Detoxpak project. “Our goal is to improve food safety and public health while maximizing food resources.”
While tuna has long been restricted in the diets of pregnant and nursing women due to mercury concerns, research suggests the actual risk may be more nuanced. A long-term study (2001–2018) found that mercury levels in three Pacific tuna species remained stable despite rising oceanic mercury from coal burning. Moreover, tuna is rich in selenium, a key nutrient for brain development that can bind with cysteine to form selenocysteine, which helps neutralize methylmercury. In fact, a 2024 study of Hawaiian mothers eating high-seafood diets found elevated umbilical cord blood mercury but also significantly higher selenium levels, suggesting a protective effect against mercury toxicity.
Beyond individual studies, a National Academy of Sciences review links regular seafood consumption—including tuna—to positive neurodevelopmental outcomes, such as a 2–5 point increase in children’s IQ. These findings indicate that while removing mercury from the diet remains a public health priority, the balance of nutrients like selenium in fish may offset some potential harm. By integrating cysteine-based packaging, tuna producers can offer a safer product that preserves essential nutrients, providing a promising step forward for both consumer confidence and global health.

UK’s Cutest Bus Stop

For the past two decades, a bus stop on Lankelly Lane in Fowey, England, has served as an ever-changing canvas for local artists. Nicknamed the “Pretty Bus Stop,” it was first decorated by Jane Tinsley to counter vandalism and anti-social behavior. Since then, volunteers have refreshed its design multiple times each year with whimsical themes ranging from a tea room to a library—and even an Elvis tribute.

The latest redesign, led by artist Sarah Worne, is called “Thyme to Stop” and incorporates real and painted plants to create a greenhouse-like atmosphere. “It was cold coming into February, so we wanted to bring some warmth and cheer to people waiting for the bus,” Worne explained. The stop’s vibrant transformations are regularly documented on its Facebook page, which boasts over 2,700 followers.

Community involvement has become central to this ongoing project, with Worne recently challenging the Fowey River Lions to create an Easter-themed design. Although she’s considered bringing similar makeovers to other local stops, ownership permissions remain a hurdle. “I’d have to find out who owns the others,” Worne said, “but I have a few in mind that could use some color.”

Thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles have converged on the shores of Odisha, India, for their annual mass nesting spectacle known as “Arribada.” A recent video shows the shoreline near the Rushikulya River teeming with these two-foot-long reptiles, each making its way ashore to lay eggs. The nesting season kicked off on February 16, when more than 11,000 turtles deposited their eggs along a 4-kilometer stretch, and as many as 600,000 are expected to arrive over the next five to seven days.
During this synchronized ritual, each female turtle excavates a pit in the sand and lays between 100 and 150 eggs before covering them up and returning to the sea. After 45 to 65 days of incubation, hatchlings emerge under the cover of night and make their treacherous journey to the ocean. Unfortunately, only about one in every 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood, underscoring the fragility of these creatures’ life cycle.
Although they appear in impressive numbers, Olive Ridley sea turtles are classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. To safeguard the nesting process, the Forest Department has fenced off critical areas and restricted public access until the hatchlings have safely reached the water. Local volunteers are also stepping in to aid conservation efforts, ensuring that this remarkable natural event continues for generations to come.
