Nanoneedles patch for better biopsies -SWNS
Biopsies may soon become a thing of the pastâat least the painful kind. Scientists at Kingâs College London have developed a skin patch embedded with tens of millions of nanoneedles, each 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. These ultra-fine structures gather molecular data from the skin without removing tissue, offering a âpainless and less invasiveâ alternative for diagnosing and monitoring diseases like cancer and Alzheimerâs.
Traditional biopsies are often uncomfortable, risky, and limited in frequency due to their invasive nature. But this new technology changes the game. The patch allows for real-time, repeatable sampling, enabling clinicians to track disease progression or treatment response without damaging the tissue. In early tests on human brain cancer samples and mouse models, the patch successfully extracted proteins, lipids, and mRNAâthen analyzed them using mass spectrometry and AI to detect tumors and evaluate therapy effectiveness.
Beyond eliminating pain, the nanoneedle system opens new doors for personalized medicine. âThis is our most exciting development yet,â said Dr. Ciro Chiappini, lead researcher on the project. The technology, which could deliver diagnostic results in under 20 minutes during surgery, may one day be built into everyday tools like bandages or contact lenses. As Dr. Chiappini puts it, âThis could be the beginning of the end for painful biopsies.â

The Beaver is Back, After 500 Years

For the first time in five centuries, the European beaver has returned to Portugalâan event one nonprofit called âone of the most significant steps in the aquatic rewilding of Portuguese rivers.â Long extinct in the region, the beaver (Castor fibre) was gradually reintroduced in parts of Spain. Now, camera trap footage confirms the species has crossed the border and is once again active in Portuguese waterways.

âWeâve been on the lookout for this breakthrough for a few years now, and now weâre thrilled to confirm its return,â said Pedro Prata, Team Leader at Rewilding Portugal. âThe beaver is a natural ally in restoring the health of our rivers and wetlands and has a fundamental role to play in our river ecosystems.â By building dams, beavers alter the landscape, creating wetlands, redirecting water flow, and offering refuge to a variety of speciesâfish, amphibians, birds, and insects alike.

According to Prata, the beaverâs impact is unmatched. âWeâre talking about a species that provides ecological services that no modern equipment can replicate with the same efficiency and scale, without costs and bureaucracy that can never be overcome.â In a country regularly plagued by drought and wildfires, beavers can help mitigate both by improving water retention and creating wetland firebreaks. Rewilding Portugal has alerted environmental authorities to prepare for the benefits and challenges, noting that while other European nations have dealt with issues like floods or damaged crops, the ecological advantages far outweigh the drawbacks. âThe beaver improves water quality, creates refuges for other species and helps us fight phenomena such as drought and fires.â Alongside the reintroduced European wood bison, Portugalâs rivers are now being reshapedâthis time, by natureâs original engineer.

Turning Trash to Treasure
What if the things we discard werenât trashâbut untold stories? Thatâs the question at the heart of From Trash to Treasure, a visually rich and emotionally resonant short documentary set in the Kingdom of Lesotho. In this 20-minute film, local artists and environmentalists show how cast-off materials are transformed into bold works of art, fashion, and cultureâbreathing new life into the waste of modern life.
But the film goes beyond recycling. âItâs restoration,â as the artists make clear. From bottle-cap gowns to intricate metal sculptures, the community isnât just tidying their surroundingsâtheyâre reshaping how the world sees them. Each creation becomes a statement of identity and pride, declaring, we were here. Itâs a quiet cultural revolution unfolding against a backdrop of resilience and ingenuity.
âTrash is not the end of a story. For many here, itâs the beginning.â From Trash to Treasure is a testament to the power of creativity under constraint. It reminds us that beauty can rise from rubble, and that culture endures as long as people are willing to fight for its voice. Whether youâre an artist, a dreamer, or simply someone who believes in the redemptive power of imagination, this film lingers long after the final frame.

đ§ Social Spotlight Reminder
"Life was meant for good friends and great adventures."
As we get older, âadventureâ starts to look different. Itâs not always about planes or passports â sometimes itâs sharing a quiet afternoon, picking up the phone to reconnect, or trying something new just to prove you still can.
The truth is, itâs the people we choose to share life with â and the moments we let ourselves fully show up for â that give it color.
So today, maybe take the long way home. Reach out to someone youâve been meaning to call. Or say yes to that simple plan you almost talked yourself out of.
The adventure doesnât have to be big. It just has to be lived.
