The Upside Down House

Upside Down House in Bristol – SWNS
A dazzling new tourist attraction has just opened its doors in Bristol, England, and it literally flips the concept of a traditional house on its head. Painted a vibrant magenta and located on Anchor Square next to the Bristol Aquarium, the Upside Down House is the 12th of its kind in the UK following the first installation in Bournemouth in 2018. Visitors step into a disorienting world where furniture is secured to the ceiling, creating the uncanny illusion of walking on the roof.
Inside, guests can explore two floors of inverted rooms, including a kitchen, living room, and bedroom—each brimming with imaginative photo opportunities. Tickets cost $7 and are sold at a booth just behind the house, with proceeds benefiting local charities or the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Adding to its family-friendly appeal, children under three get free admission, making the experience accessible for all.
Not limited to Bristol alone, Upside Down Houses have popped up in Liverpool, London, and even as far afield as France, Germany, and Australia. Each installation draws on local artists to craft whimsical décor, which often changes seasonally, transforming into a haunted spectacle at Halloween or a magical Santa’s Grotto for Christmas. With its playful twist on interior design and charitable mission, the new Bristol Upside Down House is sure to become a must-visit destination for curious locals and travelers alike.

All-Timber Wind Turbine

Credit: Voodin Blade Technology
A German company called Voodin has successfully tested a 50-meter wooden wind turbine blade, signaling a potential shift in turbine manufacturing for the Indian and European markets. The company recently demonstrated that laminated-veneer timber blades can be produced, installed, and adapted at a lower cost than conventional glass or carbon-fiber blades, without compromising performance.
Building on this progress, Voodin has partnered with Indian wind energy firm Senvion to supply wooden blades for 4.2-megawatt turbines in a new trial. One of wind power’s major environmental concerns—the difficulty of recycling turbine blades—could be addressed by using timber, as most traditional blades made with epoxy resin end up in landfills or incinerators after around 25 years. By 2050, an estimated 50 million tonnes of blade waste could accumulate worldwide.
Voodin’s solution involves mass timber—a technique already employed in skyscrapers and airports—to create recyclable blades that are roughly 20% cheaper to produce than carbon-fiber versions. These wooden blades also offer increased flexibility, potentially allowing for taller towers with longer blades that can harness higher wind speeds to boost energy output. Senvion’s feasibility analysis is slated to begin in the coming months, with full-scale testing expected around 2027.
